Monitor IP Address

Post by Phelzier on Thu Feb 05, 2015 8:20 pm

Good evening,

I see you have monitored some MAC addresses using ddwrt. I don't have a router with ddwrt on it, but is it possible to monitor a device based on a ping?

Thanks in advance
Phelz

Hey Phelz,

The ddwrt interface will be depreciated in future updates as it is not needed anymore.

There's now the 'hosts' interface, which has data based on a per minute, ping based, network scan of your LAN.

The hosts found will be presented to the system, with the IP address

Sounds good.  So if I want to tell if my TV is on or off (for example) I can get it to ping x.x.x.x of the tv and reflect the status, or IP address of mobile phones to show if person is in the house or not (as long as their phone is charged and switched on lol)

This would be good for me as it would double up as a network and server monitoring system so I can be aware if a device loses connectivity or becomes unresponsive.

Yea you'll be able to do this.

Basically, the system discovers local hosts and if online, you'll find the value is the IP address.

If the host is offline, you'll have a null value.

I use this to discover mobile phones and do automation.

I assume it can handle multiple subnets as I have my network separated into various VLANs so each one has it's own default gateway?

Can't wait for new version! Sounds amazing Very Happy

At the moment, the scope of the ping scan is determined automatically from discovering the local subnet range.

Would it be possible to implement a change to add the ability to manually enter IP address so that it pings it every minute(or defined interval)?

An example a 'normal' person might use this would be ping 8.8.8.8 so that you can alert to make sure the internet it up?
